KOREAN SIDE DISHES
Sometimes people who visit Korean restaurants are surprised to see small dishes are served that they have not been ordered. These kinds of small dishes are called ‘Banchan’.
Unlike foreign people who prefer to have one dish per person, Koreans have a culture where rice is the main food and various side dishes are served together.
You can even find traditional Korean restaurants that serve about 20 side dishes along with white rice in a region called 'Jeonju'. There are a ton of varieties including acorn jelly, egg rolls, various types of kimchi, marinated cucumber, marinated bean sprouts, seaweed etc.
So please don’t be surprised next time when you see smaller portions of side dishes (banchans) unexpectedly.
